World's shortest fairy tale
Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will ye marry me?'
The girl said, 'NO!' and the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and went fishing and hunting and played golf a lot and
drank beer and scotch and had tons of women and money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.
The end

A few weeks ago I saw three movies at the GLBT Reel Affirmations Film Festival. Hollywood je t'aime is about a Parisian who, in order to escape the gloom he suffers at home, moves to Los Angeles. There he discovers that Los Angeles isn't as wonderful a place as he imagined. In other words, this is a pretty ho-hum movie about how things aren't greener on the other side of the fence. Love for Siam is about two young teenage boys in Thailand who fall in love with each other. Lots of other events happen, but the conflict boils down to the fact that one of the boys' moms disapproves and asserts that the boy needs to prioritize his family first, which includes getting married and having kids of his own. At the end of the movie the boy agrees and tells his lover, "I can't be your boyfriend, but that doesn't mean I don't still love you." Honestly, I don't know what this film was doing at a GLBT film festival.
The movie that intrigued me the most was Pornography. The film initially presents itself as a story about a porn star who becomes the victim in a snuff film, but Pornography eventually reveals itself to be modeled closely after David Lynch's Inland Empire in that what we see is not a depiction of a reality at all but rather a character's surreal confrontation with issues lurking in his psyche. Some say that this film raises questions about what we consider pornography versus reality, but I think it's really more about what we consider our relationship to porn. The movie seems to take an excessively negative view, implying that porn always does violence to the people who make it, but it does raise relevant questions. Do we objectify people when we watch porn? Does porn replace normal human interactions? And relatedly do people watch porn because it gives them total control? Of course, these questions can apply not just to porn but to literature and movies as a whole.
